Dangers of riding your mobility scooter on pavements.

Riding a mobility scooter on the pavement can be dangerous, take care! Not only do you have to be aware of other people about but also cracks and damaged areas of the pavements that can cause you possibly fall from your mobility scooter.

However, the worst thing for people who have a disability of any sort is the growing habit of cars and other vehicles being parked on pavements. It is dangerous and inconsiderate!

Badly parked vehicles

The problem is caused by the number of vehicles that are parked in narrow roads to allow access for other cars, vans and lorries but this creates difficulties for those with walking restrictions who perhaps need to use rollators or walking frames as well and those people in wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

Worst of all of course is the danger that can be caused to blind people who need the use of a white stick to avert them from things that might be in their way, if they suddenly come across a car or van that is illegally parked on the pavement they might need to venture out into the road to allow them to pass the hazard.

Blind person with dog

As well as those people with any form of disability, this sort of action also can be a problem for families with youngsters in pushchairs.

Just imagine, if you can, finding your way along the pavement blocked by some inconsiderate person who has parked their vehicle partly on the pavement. The only alternative is to go around it by using the road.

Sometimes there will not be any clear vision for the parent pushing the youngster and the child is then exposed to the possibility of an oncoming vehicle hitting them before the parent can do anything.

Life is never going to be perfect and it is not possible to resolve all of the problems of the world but perhaps it is time to make small steps about things such as pavement parking, perhaps in streets which parking on both sides of the road means using the pavement as well there should be restrictions to only allow parking on one side of the road and then make sure the restrictions are enforced.

It would mean some difficulties for certain people but the overall benefit in safety would far outweigh any inconvenience.

Please, please, next time you think of parking with wheels on the pavement, stop and think about the safety and convenience of others especially those in pushchairs, wheelchairs, mobility scooters and anyone else who may suffer as a result of your lack of thought!

Big Van no way through

Be a better parker, save lives!!!

Arthritis, gout, whatever it is it can be painful

I read an article recently which suggested you need to raise your limbs, possibly using a riser recliner chair, if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from Arthritis or Gout.

Riser Recliner Chairs

The latest information that I have read on arthritis information service, highlighted how gout and Arthritis are linked and how the ‘flare ups’ from Gout can be so very, very painful. It can occur in men over 40 but apparently does not normally affect women before the menopause. normally only a single joint is affected and that most often is the big toe, however, it can attack in your other toes, ankles, knee’s, the foot, wrist and fingers! In really bad cases Gout/Arthritis can make performing simple everyday tasks very difficult.

As an extreme form of Arthritis, Gout can be very debilitating and can last from anything from 3 to 10 days. It is caused by tiny needle-shaped crystals of uric acid (a biological waste product) that accumulate in the joints causing severe and intense pain. Several factors can be involved for those who suffer from gout including family history, diet and even being overweight.

Treatment will normally focus on immediate pain relief, reducing the inflammation in the joints and bringing down the uric acid in the blood to help prevent further attacks.

Those who suffer from gout will be aware that in extreme attacks even the slightest pressure, for instance, a light bed sheet, can bring unbearable pain to the affected area.

Some of the symptoms of gout are; Severe pain in one or more joints, red and shiny skin on the affected joint or joints the joint may be hot and tender, it is also possible that white crystal deposits called tophi can be visible under the skin, it is possible you may feel tired and feverish.

If you suffer from an attack of Gout then you will need to rest your affected joints and to this end a riser recliner chair and possibly an adjustable bed can be extremely useful in helping to alleviate the pain in your joints and here at Mobility Products 4 U we can offer a very comprehensive selection of both that may help you through the day and night to deal with your Arthritis and Gout.

Obviously, though it is very sensible that with ongoing problems such as severe arthritis or gout that you consult your GP to discuss what they can offer in the way of help to relieve the pain and also for suggestions on how changes in your lifestyle might improve the situation you have to live with.

Should you insure your mobility scooter?

Mobility scooters can do so much to help in our lives and sometimes you do not realise it until it is stolen or damaged! But what do you do if it is stolen, the cost of a replacement can be enormous but if you have been sensible and insured it you will be able to get a replacement quickly and no cost to you.

As well as covering yourself for theft you also need to be covered for the possibility of you having an accident that is your fault in which someone is injured or some property is damaged. If a civil case for damages is brought against you the cost to you as an individual can be astronomical but if you have the strength of the insurance companies around you then you will not have to worry. They will either arrange to defend you in any case or if that is not possible they will make the settlement on your behalf.

If you just think about when you are out in a shopping area and someone walks out in front of you and you are travelling, as allowed, at 4mph then you could cause serious damage to that person if you hit them. If they are injured and need medical treatment there is always a possibility that they would seek redress against you for the injuries and also for loss of income etc and this could then become very costly and this is where you need the insurance to cover you.

Whilst I do not sell insurance policies for third part companies I will always be happy to give details of the leading specialist insurance companies in the UK that will give you the cover you need at very little cost to you and so give you the peace of mind that you need.

Please be safe out there when driving your mobility scooter and always please obey the Highway Code as it appertains to the use of your machine. When riding through a shop, a shopping centre or just along the pavement please always be aware of the public around you and just think your mobility scooter is electric and is silent so it is very possible that pedestrians will not even be aware that you are there.

Be safe, be sensible and be insured!

Your adjustable bed in a nursing home

Adjustable bed

This winter there seems to be more problems than ever in the care of the elderly and if you have someone you care for who needs to move into a nursing home taking things like their own adjustable bed can make it feel so much more like home!

If your loved one is having to go into a care home or nursing home for the first time you will find that the management there will encourage you to use as much of the persons own furniture and general belongings as possible so that they do genuinely feel more ‘at home’

You will need to understand that the home concerned will need to ensure that the products such as an adjustable bed or riser recliner chair have all of the correct labels on them to comply with the fire labels required by law. It is strange that if the nursing home supply these items the standards and requirements are greater than needed for the users own items.

One of the problems I have come across with a family member having to move into a nursing home was that the adjustable bed that they supplied had a mattress that was upholstered in a ‘plastic’ washable cover which whilst being very practical for the staff in the home it was less comfortable than the one she was used to. So we arranged for her own adjustable bed to be taken in and then supplied incontinence pads for the bed which turned out to be a very good compromise.

You will find that any items you supply for use in the nursing home will need to be able to confirm to the standards laid down, all electrical items will need to be PAT tested once a year to make sure that they are safe and all furniture items should at least conform to Crib 3 standard where as those supplied by the nursing or care home need to be Crib 5

Taking your own adjustable bed and riser recliner chair into the nursing home you are going into can be so beneficial in making your loved one feel as though it is not just a room but is also some part of them, memories with pictures and personal items will make it all so much better.

I hope that when you have to take your loved one or the person you are responsible for into a home that you find one which suits them straight away and that you don’t, as I did, have to keep moving them and their adjustable bed from place to place

Sale Time

In days of old sale time in the furniture trade used to be twice a year, winter and summer. Now it seems to me that it is always sale time!

This winter I have joined the race for more business by introducing some ‘sale offers’ off selected items and to do this I have offered savings on products that I offer all the time, but for a limited period that are available for less than normally available on the site and are genuine reductions which will end at the end of January 2018.

If you are looking for a new riser recliner chair then the GFA Alicante might be a very good choice for you and is now available at £359.24 (excluding VAT if you are eligible for VAT relief) instead of the normal £399.16.

The offer that I have on adjustable beds is on the bodyease 3′ 6″ range and gives an extra saving on all of the selection from them meaning that this larger version of a single adjustable bed is starting from as little as £480.37 instead of £549.00, again this is a product that can be supplied exempt from VAT if you are within the qualifying requirements.

For those people who already have an adjustable bed then it might well be the right time to think of replacing your existing mattress as I have until the end of the month 15% savings available on all bodyease mattresses which can be a real help in the expensive part of buying a new product.

Whilst I have other genuine offers on my website it does amaze me how many companies advertise “must end next Tuesday” but they never seem to say which Tuesday! now call me old fashioned but a sale should be a sale and should be different from the normal trading period.

So if you are looking for genuine savings then check out my offers at www.mobilityproducts4u.org.

Make sure you are comfortable this winter.

Adjustable bed

All of a sudden it begins to look like winter so now is the time to ensure you are comfortable during the cold, get that new adjustable bed or riser recliner chair you have been thinking about.

Even if you do not want to change your complete adjustable bed it is probably a good idea to get the mattress checked out and if it is, like me, getting to be old and wrinkly then it would be sensible to get the new one ordered now so you do not have another winter of discomfort.

Through my website, www.mobilityproducts4u.org I am able to offer you a selection of either complete adjustable beds or just replacement mattresses and depending on your own circumstances it is possible you will be able to make you purchase exempt of VAT which will give you a whopping saving of 20%.

You are able to select from a range of sizes from 2ft 3in wide right up to 6ft wide depending on your space available and your own requirements, but remember all adjustable beds and replacement mattresses are 6ft 6in (2 metres) in length so be aware and don’t get caught out!

Adjustable beds and mattresses are available with different fillings, from pocket springs or pocket springs with memory foam topping, reflex foam mattresses for those who prefer a firmer support or memory foam that will mould to your body and support you gently without creating any pressure sores. There are also sets and mattresses available in latex foam or ‘gel’ foam for that more responsive feel, I am certain that whatever your needs I have an adjustable bed or mattress to suit you and I am happy to talk to you about the differences and offer you advice based on my many, many, years in the bedding trade (I did say earlier I was old and wrinkly!).

Once you have sorted your bed out you probably need to think about your comfort during the day and to that end, it is perhaps a good idea to check out the wonderful range of riser recliner chairs on offer on the website; www.mobilityproducts4u.org you can find single or dual motor riser recliner chairs that will not only be comfortable but will also help you from a sitting to a standing position gently and quietly, then of course when you want to sit down again the reverse action will take you to that sitting position but also will enable you to recline as you want. It is sensible to remember that again, dependant on the users circumstances, it is possible to save that 20% VAT.

If you need help or advice then please call me Robert Winchurch on 01492 548102 and I will do my very best to point you in the right direction

Can you be comfortable in your riser recliner by a log burner

Whatever you sit in be it a riser recliner or a swivel recliner chair just make sure that if you are near a log burner it is properly installed.

We are arriving at the time of year when the weather is getting better (hopefully) and the central heating gets turned off but there are still those chilly evenings which means some heat is needed and it is a growing trend and fashion to have that heat supplied by log or wood burners.

They look so good in the corner of the room and as you relax in your riser recliner all can seem well but what you can never see is the invisible killer, carbon monoxide. It is colourless odourless and tasteless but DEADLY. If your wood burner or gas fire is not properly fitted then the likely hood of you suffering brain damage or even dying as a result of the fumes given off by these sorts of appliances is very high indeed.

log burner

It is frightening if you listen to what the experts such as Stephen Hadley have to say about not getting a qualified engineer to fit the source of your heating correctly you will realise just how dangerous it can become to you and your loved ones and the really frightening thing is that you actually do not need any qualifications to install a wood burner! Yes any DIY expert (so called) can put one of these items in your home unlike gas appliances which are legally required to be fitted by a Gas Fire Registered gas fitter. This scheme replaces the old system known as Corgi. Be sensible and if you decide on a wood burner then make sure it is fitted properly by a properly qualified gas engineer and also install carbon monoxide detectors in every room that has a flame burning appliance, though they will only help you must also check them regularly to make sure any batteries are working properly.

Now back to your riser recliner you know that everything is installed properly and you can relax and even go to sleep in the chair knowing you will be safe and will wake up later! Perhaps you might even lie there and plan the next BBQ, if you do make sure that you are very sensible about the way you use that it would be so devastating if you got the inside of your home safe only to pass away sitting around the cooling embers of your BBQ!

If you need information on how to be safe whilst enjoying your next barbie then perhaps it might be good to look at the information contained in the web site run by a lady called Sonya and the site is LeanOnUs.

Me I am just ready for putting my feet up and relaxing in the comfort of my riser recliner chair after all of this work!

1966 and all that

For a lot of people who watched and enjoyed the 1966 world cup, they may, like me, be watching the 2018 final from a riser recliner chair but that’s not the only difference.

England with the world cup 1966

Way back in 1966 I was just 22 and had started my first job as a sales representative for L’oreal (because I was worth it!). First time out with my area manager (boss) was the day of England’s first game, a Monday, whilst I was keen to impress and do a good job I also wanted to get home to watch the game on TV, unfortunately, he was not interested  in football and we worked solidly until 5 pm and then he wanted to go through all of the paperwork for the day before leaving me in Stoke on Trent at 6-45 pm for him to travel to Chester to meet up with another rep the following day. My journey was back to Stratford on Avon (nearby anyway) and this was in the days before motorways, and it was nearly 2 hours later by the time I got back home and I had missed most of the match. Mind you it was only a draw 0-0 so I don’t suppose I missed a lot.

By careful planning, I made sure that I saw the rest of the tournament but it was such a different time then, pubs had very restricted opening hours and they had to close in the afternoons and normally had to close at 10-30 in the evening so drinking after evening or afternoon matches was only possible if you had drinks in at home and back in 1966 that didn’t happen very often!

England went on to win 4-2 in extra time against Germany FR (that stood for the Federal Republic of Germany actually West Germany as in those days Germany was split into two parts with East Germany being under communist control) it was a very good game but had two moments that live forever. The third England goal was and still is heavily contested by the Germans as they felt that the ball had not fully crossed the line, (who knows, who cares it counted on the day!). Then the famous commentary from Kenneth Wolstenholme as a spectator ran on the pitch at the same time as Geoff Hurst broke away to score the fourth England goal, it went something like ” There’s someone on the pitch, they think its all over” and then as Hurst nearly broke the back of the net with a thunderous shot Wolstenholme continued “It is now!” and it was England won 4 – 2 and we celebrated and embraced and then the Jules Rimet trophy (the world cup) was presented to Bobby Moore, Englands victorious captain.

Then it all went a bit flat it was over an hour before the pubs opened and so we just had to wait for the celebratory drink. Unlike today when you can be in the pub all day and rink to your heart’s content and throw beer all over each other when England score!! Still, at least I have been able to celebrate England winning the world cup once let’s hope this week means that it will have happened twice in my lifetime.

Back to reality though I couldn’t jump and down now if England scored it would take me to long to get out of my riser recliner chair!!

The world from a riser recliner

Anyone who has been around as long as me, (don’t ask how long please) will have seen lots of changes and from the comfort of a riser recliner chair, it is a very unstable world indeed.

GFA Radford Riser recliner

From Russian spies and immediate family being poisoned on British soil to people being killed and injured by poisonous gas in Syria, it becomes very frightening, what will happen next? as well as that there is the fall out that is going to happen when the UK leaves the EU (I am so fed up with the word Brexit where ever did that come from?), will it affect the relatively stable situation in Ireland at present or will the various factions there use the possibility of the return of border controls to reignite old tensions?

It is terrible that from whatever of the two sides you supported when the referendum took place there was no requirement for a situation which perhaps had needed a two-thirds majority to make the result binding as it was a majority of one either way would have been enough. Unfortunately, the result leaves the 16 million or so who voted to stay disenfranchised and the 17 plus million who voted to leave do not seems as though they will actually get what they thought was being offered and what they wanted. Lots of people, (mainly Tony Blair) think that we should have another referendum when the final  terms are agreed, if that happens and the result is that the terms are rejected and that the UK wishes to stay in the EU what happens next, will the rest of the EU members actually allow us to stay and if they do will they want the UK to renegotiate the terms and will the UK then finish up falling between two stools?

In the time I have been around, not all of it sat in a riser recliner chair, I have seen the missile crisis between the USA and Russia which we felt as though it might be the end of the world, the struggle in Vietnam between the USA and the Vietcong which ended in an embarrassing and panic style withdrawal by the Americans, followed by the fall of the Berlin wall and the supposed freedom of the East from communism which now seems to have led to another Dictator who is stronger than people from the past such as Kruschev or even Stalin and with powers that reach out to the whole world.

The only thing I have realised in that time is that the ordinary person in the world has very little, if any, real influence on what our supposed leaders do in this world but we keep trying to believe until somebody can find a better and peaceful way for us all to live.

If you are stressed by what is happening then just get yourself comfortable in a riser recliner chair and relax, it won’t make any difference to what happens but at least you can be comfortable as it all goes on!

It’s March, time to replace your adjustable bed mattress?

Marie Curie

March the 1st is important as it represents the start of spring and time to think about spring cleaning and whilst doing that checking your adjustable bed mattress to see if it is ready to be changed!

March is always a very special month and not just because it is National Bed Month, after all it is my birthday month as well!

Now for those people who know about these things you will be aware that the Daffodil plays a really important part in the month of March, firstly because it is the National flower of Wales and March the first is St David’s Day (the Patron Saint of Wales) and it is celebrated with real pride but it is also the symbol used by the Marie Curie Cancer Support Charity and they use the daffodil to represent themselves all year long but even more so in March when you are able to buy their daffodils to wear and the money collected throughout the month goes a long way to supporting their work.

In many ways just as important as the daffodil is in March is the promotion each year by the NBF (the National Bed Federation) of National Bed Month. Obviously the idea is one to make people more aware of beds and go out and buy new ones. Realistically though it is as important to make us all aware of our beds, if you think about it we go to bed, sleep wake up then get up and in most cases someone will make the bed look tidy in the morning, but how often do we actually look at the bed and the mattress, if you think about it I would hazard a guess that most people cannot remember the last time they actually examined their mattress or base and it is important to make sure that the whole bed is still in good condition and is giving the proper support. Too many people will look and find that it, the mattress, has gone lumpy and the padding has moved or that there is a dip in it where your hips have been and then just cover it up again!

It is so important that we have the right support when asleep and even more so for those people who need to use an adjustable bed. The mattresses on adjustable beds can be used longer than normal beds and mattresses because of the health problems of the people using them and so they are likely to need changing on a more regular basis and it is possible to purchase a replacement mattresses that will work with any adjustable bed action and here at www.mobilityproducts4u.org we, (well me actually) have a wealth of experience and knowledge that we are (I am) happy and willing to share with you, either an email or a telephone call will have my full attention so that I can guide you to the correct mattress for your needs and comfort.

So March is important as a month, it is the start of spring, St David’s Day, the Marie Curie Daffodil support month, National Bed Month and there is something else, oh yes its my birthday this month!!!

Have a very happy March check your bed, support Marie Currie, enjoy the start of spring and of course don’t forget Robert’s birthday!

I need to apologise to one and all as I did not mention when I first posted this blog that March is also the month of Mothers Day and of course St Patricks Day, is it possible that March may just be the best month of the year?
