The Adventure Begins!

Exams are over, school’s out and for many, it is just the start of a new adventure! So, ensure their adventure does not end up with them in an adjustable bed, or wheelchair, because of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Safety for anyone in life is important but for students, perhaps leaving home for the first time, it is even more so. In their first year, most will go into university designated accommodation (halls of residence) whilst most second-year students will opt for private flats or shared houses. This is where the danger can lurk.
By law, all rented properties should come with a gas safety certificate which means that the boiler and other gas appliances are safe and have been properly and regularly checked. As well as gas appliances, anything that has a flue to extract fumes (such as an open fire or wood burner) should also be checked and the stacks swept two, three or four times each year.
A good landlord will, of course, know about and comply with these regulations, but others may not know or may not care. Heaven forbid that they might have to spend their own money to look after the people occupying the property despite taking rent from them! However, CARBON MONOXIDE is not known as the silent killer without good reason!
Carbon monoxide is tasteless, colourless and invisible but can have devastating effects and can kill within a few minutes. For those who are lucky enough to survive CO poisoning, it can cause damage that can affect the heart, liver, kidneys, brain, lungs or indeed any part of the human body. It can leave the person crippled, bedridden or wheelchair bound for the rest of their life.
So, if you have been looking at accommodation for any member of your family, young or old, off to university or college – then the first and most important thing to do is to insist on seeing a CURRENT GAS SAFETY CERTIFICATE. Most good landlords will have this ready to show you anyway, but some may forget. Whatever you do, make sure that their possible error is not something that robs your family of its future potential or even worse, the life of one of its members.
Do not let a wheelchair, mobility scooter or an adjustable bed become part of your family’s life just because you didn’t ask to see the GAS SAFETY CERTIFICATE or did not check that the chimney had been swept.
We will return to this desperately important subject again but if you need more information then please check out, at the very least, our latest campaign with student flyer Don’t let the next headline, be your deadline!
Be sensible and make sure your loved ones are safe from carbon monoxide!

Swivel chairs so comfortable so versatile

When space is at a premium then the space saving offered by swivel recliner chairs can be really advantageous.

Siena Truffle Swivel Chair

Small rooms can really benefit by having a compact but comfortable swivel recliner chair and most come with matching footstools to give even more support. Bedrooms, conservatories, offices are all really ideal places to utilise these swivel recliner chairs in but one of the really great places for them is on narrow boats (them that you see gliding slowly along the canals across the UK). But then you have to think if they will fit so well onto a narrow boat what about holiday homes or mobile homes? The amount of different places you can use them is enormous.

If you look through the swivel recliner chairs we have on offer at www.mobilityproducts4u.org there is bound to be one that will fit into your space however limited it is. The beauty as well is that most come ready for assembly and so it makes getting them into tight spaces even easier.

With chairs from GFA, Serene and Julian Bowen we can offer soft cloth fabrics, faux suede or faux leather as well as real leather and with prices starting from as little as £169.00 including VAT and delivery you do not need to break the bank to be very comfortable.

GFA SIENA

Shown above is the GFA Siena swivel chair with footstool which is available in two colours Cafe Latte or Truffle both faux leather (who thinks these names up?) it has a matching upholstered base and slim and comfortable, ideal for use in confined areas, but this is just one of many wonderful and supportive swivel recliner chairs we can offer you and all at really good prices. Standard delivery is normally 5 to 10 working days and sometimes even quicker.

All sizes are shown on the site but if you need any more  information or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me, Robert Winchurch, by email at office@mobilityproducts4u.org or by using the contact form on the site or if you prefer I am always delighted to take phone calls on 01492 548102 and try to use my years and years of experience in the furniture trade (I only started back in 1959) to guide you to the best chair for your comfort.

If University beckons for your family make sure they are safe

Exams over, schools out but for many, it is just the start of a new adventure, make sure that their adventure does not end up with them in an adjustable bed or wheelchair because of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Safety for anyone in life is important but for students, perhaps leaving home for the first time, it is even more so. Carbon Monoxide is tasteless, colourless and invisible but can have devastating effects, mainly death of course but as well it can cause damage to those who survive death that could affect the heart, liver, kidneys, brain, lungs or indeed any part of the human body and leave the person crippled and bedridden or wheelchair bound for the rest of their lives.

So if during this summer you are going to look at accommodation for any member of your family, young or old, off to university then the first and most important thing to do is to insist on seeing a CURRENT GAS SAFETY CERTIFICATE, most good landlords will have this ready to show you anyway but some may forget but whatever you do make sure that their possible error is not something that robs your family of its future potential or even worse the life of one of its members.

We will return to this desperately important subject again before the start of the University year but if you need more information then please check out, at the very least, one or both of these excellent websites for information and advice. https://www.consumersafetyinternational.com/ https://www.leanonus.co/

Be sensible and make sure your loved ones are safe from Carbon monoxide

Carbon Monoxide Alarms, could they be the death of you?

CO POISONING

We all know that Which? magazine gives good honest independent reports and when they say that 54 dangerous carbon monoxide alarms have been removed from two of the leading online sales sites, you will realise that there is a real need to be concerned.

With an alarm that does not work properly, it is possible that you could go to sleep in your adjustable bed and never wake up!

For many years now, Molly Maher has run Consumer Safety International which is a fantastic charity that offers information and helps with the problems that can’t be found due to faulty appliances that can create CO poisoning. Molly created CSI over 30 years ago after she lost her son to CO poisoning and her daughter was left in a wheelchair as a result of a faulty water heater in a holiday apartment in Tenerife. You can watch The Molly Maher Story by Ray Kemp. Since then, there has been a growing awareness of the problems of carbon monoxide and even big campaigns to raise people’s perceptions surrounding BBQs and the safe use of them.

One campaign has been run by Sonya Palasiuk through LeanOnUs to help us all understand the dangers posed by BBQs and CO poisoning. So many times, we use a BBQ for cooking and all enjoy the results but the CO emissions that are given off from them, especially when the coals are in their ‘white’ state can be deadly! Never ever move a BBQ into an enclosed space such as a tent or caravan awning to keep warm as the afternoon turns to evening and the temperature drops. Carbon monoxide is not called The Silent Killer without good reason; it is colourless, odourless and not visible, it can force the oxygen out of enclosed spaces all too easily and then you find a disaster the morning after a fun-filled evening when those folks who were silly enough to bring the BBQ inside are either dead, unconscious or just left brain damaged.

I do not want to be a harbinger of doom and gloom, but it is best we are all as aware as possible of the dangers created by carbon monoxide. It is the same with gas boilers, gas fires, wood burners and any open fire used indoors they can all be dangerous if they are not properly maintained and serviced (at least once a year). Chimneys should be swept regularly to make sure that there is a clear way for all the fumes to escape. Sometimes you will see bedrooms with open fires, or even occasionally with gas boilers installed in them, and this can be so frightening because if they are not in perfect working order it is possible to go to bed and be overcome by carbon monoxide fumes as you sleep.

Which? reported on 54 different alarms that did not give off the correct audible alarms or in some cases did just not work. It is far better to make sure all your appliances, that use proper flames to produce heat, are properly serviced and maintained rather than relying on an alarm that does not work!

Replacing your adjustable bed mattress

Adjustable bed mattresses can, perhaps, need changing more often than a normal bed, this because of the movement of the adjustable bed action they are laying on.

What then do you need to look for when you find that the mattress you are using is not giving you the support you need. Listed below you will find details of various mattresses and information about them that will, hopefully, help you to make the right choice for your comfort.

Electro Relaxer

electro relaxer

This is a very comfortable mattress with traditional fillings and pocket springs that move with your body and with the action of your adjustable bed. As there is no edge wire the mattress bends properly. With hypo-allergenic fillings and a lovely Viscoe Damask fabric cover this mattress is double sided so that you can turn it over to lengthen the life of the mattress, but make sure you get someone to help or do it for you.

Electro Pressure Reliever

Pressure reliever

Designed to reduce pressure on the body especially the joints this can be a very beneficial mattress for those who, like me, suffer from the pains of arthritis. With a combination of memory foam onto a reflex foam, you will be assured of great comfort and support. For those who worry about foam being too warm to sleep on this mattress has a breathable Maxi Cool soft touch fabric cover that helps to regulate your body temperature during the night. This is a no turn mattress and is hypo-allergenic as well.

Electro Latex

Electro latex

For those people who want foam but do not like the feel of memory foam, this wonderful electro latex mattress gives complete support and has a breathable two-way stretch fabric cover with micro quilting to enhance the comfort. Hypo-allergenic and designed especially for adjustable beds.

These are just a selection of the many mattresses we have on the site and we can supply all sizes from 2′ 3″ wide right through to 6′ 0″ wide. With different variations, there is bound to be a mattress that suits your special needs. Remember though that all adjustable bed mattresses that we supply are 6′ 6″ long

As well as the mattresses we are delighted to offer a full range of complete adjustable beds, with more coming soon. If you need more information or advice then please contact me, Robert Winchurch through the contact link on the website or by telephone on 01492 548102. Having started in the furniture and bedding trade back in 1959 I have a lot of experience and some of the answers to your questions, but I am still learning all the time, I also suffer from medical problems, sleep apnoea and severe arthritis mainly so I am able to emphasise with you.

More information about mattresses and adjustable beds will be coming your way very soon.  Don’t forget though that as well as adjustable beds https://www.mobilityproducts4u.org also offers a wide range of riser recliner chairs, swivel  recliner chairs, mobility scooters and so much more

How many parts can you damage before you need a mobility scooter

When you are young, say, teens, twenties and thirties we all do things that our bodies aren’t designed for and then unfortunately in later life those factors come back to haunt us!

Some people need mobility scooters because of complications such as arthritis or even worse paralysis to lower limbs, others just keep doing damage to their bodies and eventually, realise they need a mobility scooter.

Whatever the reason you might require a mobility scooter there is now a vast range for you to select from. It takes some thought, but do you need one to use all of the time or just to go around those trips to the shopping centre which could be a very light mobility scooter or power chair that is easy to fold up and get into the boot of your car or do you need something bigger that can go for a fair number of miles at speeds of up to 8mph.

Road going mobility scooters are legal on most roads in the UK with the exceptions of Motorways and Dual carriageways, however,  to go on the roads each mobility scooter must have indicators, lights and an audible warning system ( a horn to you and me ). More than that though do you know that the road going mobility scooters should technically be registered with the DVLA and if they are not then it is possible to find yourself stopped by the police and asked for your registration documents.

Another very important part of riding any mobility scooter, large or small, is insurance, it may sound silly but if you are involved in an accident in which someone is hurt then there could be costly consequences and so for very little each week I would advise that you get the protection of a specialist insurance firm such as Make Bates Ltd and their Premier Care Cover, then you will be covered in the event of an accident or even worse the theft of or damage to your mobility scooter.

Whenever you are thinking that you may need a mobility scooter then consult us at www.mobillityproducts4u.org and I Robert Winchurch will be delighted to advise you with regard to your needs.

It is nearly time to escape from the riser recliner and get the BBQ out

Last week’s sunshine was enough to make you think about getting out of your riser recliner and enjoying the BBQ in your garden but before you do, make sure you are as safe as you can be. BBQs are possibly one of the most dangerous areas for CO poisoning. The lovely white glow from the coals looks so inviting, especially as the sun starts to fade and it gets a little colder.

At that stage, some people pull the BBQ into the awning to help keep them warm, but this is so, so dangerous. Carbon monoxide is colourless, tasteless and not visible and in an enclosed area, it is so easy to huddle around the BBQ and slowly start to succumb to the fumes given off from the embers.

If you want to be aware of the dangers of BBQs, head over to this site  https://www.leanonus.co/bbq which will give proper dos and don’ts for having a BBQ. None of us wants to be a killjoy, but better that than to find out that a loved one has passed away because of not knowing about carbon monoxide poisoning. Remember, it is known as “The Silent Killer”.

However, carbon monoxide is not just restricted to BBQs and combustion products such as gas boilers, gas fires, open fires or even wood burners. They can all give off the poison that is carbon monoxide if they are not properly fitted and service regularly. Any slight leak can build up, over a period of time, without you realising there is a problem. So, if you start feeling drowsy for any reason, or suffer headaches that you haven’t been aware of before, then do not take any chances! Call in your properly registered gas fitter and make sure everything is checked out and working properly.

I read in one of the Sunday papers last weekend, about an owner of a first floor flat who could smell wood fumes coming through from the new wood burner that the occupiers of the ground floor flat had recently installed. My first thoughts were, I wonder if as well as the smell of the wood, might he be getting a leak of carbon monoxide from the flat below too. It might well be too late before anyone finds out!

Perhaps it is safer to stay indoors in your riser recliner and have somebody bring you the food to enjoy. Stay safe.
